The present tense (regular)

How to conjugate regular -ar, -er and -ir verbs in the present tense.

Three verb groups

Spanish verbs in the infinitive end in -ar, -er or -ir (e.g. hablar, comer, vivir). To conjugate, you remove the ending (the stem) and add a new ending that matches the person.

  • hablar → stem habl-
  • comer → stem com-
  • vivir → stem viv-

The endings differ per group, but follow a fixed pattern.

Examples

Yo hablo, tú comes, ella vive.I speak, you eat, she lives.

-ar verbs: hablar (to speak)

The endings for -ar verbs are: -o, -as, -a, -amos, -áis, -an.

hablar
yohablo
túhablas
él / ella / ustedhabla
nosotros/ashablamos
vosotros/ashabláis
ellos / ellas / ustedeshablan

Examples

Nosotros hablamos español en casa.We speak Spanish at home.
¿Vosotros habláis inglés?Do you all speak English?
Ellos trabajan en Madrid. They work in Madrid.

-er verbs: comer (to eat)

The endings for -er verbs are: -o, -es, -e, -emos, -éis, -en.

comer
yocomo
túcomes
él / ella / ustedcome
nosotros/ascomemos
vosotros/ascoméis
ellos / ellas / ustedescomen

Examples

Yo como fruta todos los días.I eat fruit every day.
¿Tú comes carne?Do you eat meat?
Nosotros comemos a las dos.We eat at two o'clock.

-ir verbs: vivir (to live)

The endings for -ir verbs are: -o, -es, -e, -imos, -ís, -en. They're very similar to -er verbs, except for nosotros and vosotros.

vivir
yovivo
túvives
él / ella / ustedvive
nosotros/asvivimos
vosotros/asvivís
ellos / ellas / ustedesviven

Examples

Ella vive en Barcelona. She lives in Barcelona.
¿Dónde vivís vosotros?Where do you all live?
Los estudiantes escriben mucho. The students write a lot.

When do you use the present tense?

You use the Spanish present tense (presente) for:

  • Habits and routines: Trabajo de lunes a viernes. (I work from Monday to Friday.)
  • General truths: El agua hierve a cien grados. (Water boils at a hundred degrees.)
  • Things happening now: Vivo en Madrid. (I live in Madrid.)
  • The near future (just like in English): Mañana viajo a París. (Tomorrow I travel to Paris.)

Examples

Estudio español los martes.I study Spanish on Tuesdays.
El sol sale por el este. The sun rises in the east.

💡 Tips

💡
Remember the vowel in the ending: -ar verbs mostly use 'a', -er and -ir verbs mostly use 'e'. Only 'yo' is always -o.
💡
-er and -ir verbs are identical except for nosotros (-emos/-imos) and vosotros (-éis/-ís).
💡
Practice with common regular verbs: hablar, trabajar, estudiar, comer, beber, aprender, vivir, escribir, abrir.
