Irregular verbs in the present tense

Irregular yo-forms, stem-changing verbs (e>ie, o>ue, e>i), and the fully irregular ser, ir and estar.

Irregular only in the yo-form

Some verbs are completely regular, except in the yo-form. The rest of the conjugation (tú, él/ella/usted, nosotros, vosotros, ellos) follows the normal pattern.

infinitivoyo
hacer (doen/maken)hago
poner (zetten/leggen)pongo
salir (uitgaan/vertrekken)salgo
tener (hebben)tengo
venir (komen)vengo
decir (zeggen)digo
saber (weten)sé
conocer (kennen)conozco

Examples

Yo hago la cena todos los días.I make dinner every day.
Yo salgo de casa a las ocho.I leave the house at eight.
Yo no sé la respuesta, pero conozco a la profesora.I don't know the answer, but I know the teacher.

Stem-changing e > ie

In these verbs, the stem's last e changes to ie, except in the nosotros and vosotros forms (where the stress doesn't fall on the stem). Querer (to want/love) and pensar (to think) follow this pattern.

Note: tener and venir also follow this pattern (tienes, tiene…), on top of their irregular yo-form (tengo, vengo) from the previous section.

querer
yoquiero
túquieres
él/ella/ustedquiere
nosotros/asqueremos
vosotros/asqueréis
ellos/ellas/ustedesquieren

Examples

¿Quieres un café?Do you want a coffee?
Pienso mucho en el examen.I think a lot about the exam.
Nosotros queremos aprender español.We want to learn Spanish.

Stem-changing o > ue

Here, the stem's o changes to ue, again except for nosotros and vosotros. Poder (to be able to) and dormir (to sleep) are the best-known examples.

túpuedesduermes
él/ella/ustedpuededuerme
nosotros/aspodemosdormimos
vosotros/aspodéisdormís
ellos/ellas/ustedespuedenduermen

Examples

No puedo salir hoy.I can't go out today.
Los niños duermen mucho. The children sleep a lot.

Stem-changing e > i

This group only contains -ir verbs. The stem's e becomes i, except for nosotros and vosotros. Pedir (to ask for, to order) is the typical example.

pedir

él/ella/ustedpide
nosotros/aspedimos
vosotros/aspedís
ellos/ellas/ustedespiden

Examples

Yo pido una ensalada.I order a salad.
¿Qué pides tú?What do you order?

Fully irregular: ser, ir, estar

Ser, ir and estar follow no pattern and must be memorized separately. Ser and estar both mean 'to be', but ser is for permanent characteristics (identity, character) and estar for temporary states or location.

túeresvasestás
él/ella/ustedesvaestá
nosotros/assomosvamosestamos
vosotros/assoisvaisestáis
ellos/ellas/ustedessonvanestán

Examples

Soy profesora y estoy cansada hoy.I am a teacher and I am tired today.
Vamos al cine los viernes. We go to the movies on Fridays.

💡 Tips

💡
In stem-changing verbs, the stem never changes for 'nosotros' and 'vosotros' — the stress doesn't fall on the stem there.
💡
'Tener' and 'venir' are doubly irregular: an irregular yo-form (tengo/vengo) plus the e>ie stem change in the other forms (tienes, viene…).
💡
Ser = who/what something is (permanent); estar = where something is or how it feels (temporary).
