Pluscuamperfecto (past perfect)

Learn how to form the pluscuamperfecto with había + past participle, and how to use it to show that something had already happened before another point in the past.

Formation: había + past participle

The pluscuamperfecto is formed with the imperfect of haber (había, habías, había, habíamos, habíais, habían) + the past participle (participio) of the main verb.

The participle is regular: -ar → -ado, -er/-ir → -ido. It never changes, regardless of the subject.

Irregular past participles

A number of common verbs have an irregular participle:

  • hacer → hecho
  • decir → dicho
  • escribir → escrito
  • ver → visto
  • poner → puesto
  • volver → vuelto
  • abrir → abierto
  • romper → roto
  • morir → muerto
  • cubrir → cubierto
  • descubrir → descubierto

Examples

Use: an action before another past action

The pluscuamperfecto describes an action that had already been completed before another action in the past took place — the 'past of the past'.

It's often used together with cuando, ya ('already') and todavía no ('not yet').

Examples

Cuando llegué, ya había empezado la película. When I arrived, the movie had already started.
Todavía no había comido cuando llamaste.I hadn't eaten yet when you called.

Contrast with pretérito indefinido

The pretérito indefinido describes one completed action in the past. The pluscuamperfecto describes an action that was already completed before that.

Compare: Comí. (I ate, a simple fact) vs Ya había comido cuando llegaste. (I had already eaten, before you arrived).

Examples

Compré el billete después de que el tren ya había salido.I bought the ticket after the train had already left.
Cuando el profesor entró, los alumnos ya habían terminado el examen. When the teacher came in, the students had already finished the exam.

💡 Tips

💡
Había never changes because of the main verb — only the participle changes (-ado/-ido).
💡
'Ya' + pluscuamperfecto = 'already'; 'todavía no' + pluscuamperfecto = 'not yet'.
