Futuro perfecto (future perfect)

Learn how to form the futuro perfecto with habré + past participle, and how to use it for completed future actions and for guesses about the past.

Formation: habré + past participle

The futuro perfecto is formed with the futuro simple of haber (habré, habrás, habrá, habremos, habréis, habrán) + the past participle of the main verb.

The stem habr- is irregular (just like the regular futuro simple), but the endings are regular.

Examples

Habré terminado el informe para el viernes.I will have finished the report by Friday.
Para las ocho, ya habremos cenado.By eight o'clock, we will already have had dinner.

Use: an action that will be completed by a point in the future

You use the futuro perfecto for an action that will be completed before a specific point in the future. That point is often marked with para + time expression, or with cuando + subjunctive.

Examples

Cuando llegues, ya habré salido.By the time you arrive, I will already have left.
Para el año que viene, ella ya habrá aprendido inglés.By next year, she will already have learned English.

Use: probability in the (recent) past

The futuro perfecto also expresses a guess or conjecture about something that has probably already happened — similar to English 'must have...'.

Examples

No contesta al teléfono; se le habrá olvidado el móvil en casa.He/she isn't answering the phone; he/she must have forgotten his/her phone at home.
Habrá salido ya del trabajo.He/she must have already left work.

Irregular past participles (recap)

Just like with the pluscuamperfecto, the futuro perfecto uses the same irregular participles: hecho, dicho, escrito, visto, puesto, vuelto, abierto, roto, muerto, cubierto, descubierto.

Examples

¿Habrás hecho los deberes para mañana? Will you have done the homework by tomorrow?
Para entonces, habrán puesto la mesa.By then, they will have set the table.

💡 Tips

💡
The stem habr- is the same irregular stem as in the regular futuro (haber → habr-), so if you know futuro simple, you already know habré.
💡
'Para + time' often marks the deadline by which something will be completed.
💡
Recognize the 'guess' meaning: 'habrá + participle' often translates as 'must have ...'.
