B2 Si clauses — conditional sentences
advertisement
Spanish si (if) sentences come in three types, each with a fixed tense pairing.
| Si estudias, apruebas. | If you study, you pass. (real) |
| Si estudiaras, aprobarías. | If you studied, you would pass. (hypothetical) |
| Si hubieras estudiado, habrías aprobado. | If you had studied, you would have passed. (impossible past) |
Type 2 uses the imperfect subjunctive + conditional; type 3 uses the pluperfect subjunctive + conditional perfect. Never use the present subjunctive right after si.
