advertisement

Spanish si (if) sentences come in three types, each with a fixed tense pairing.

Si estudias, apruebas. If you study, you pass. (real)
Si estudiaras, aprobarías.If you studied, you would pass. (hypothetical)
Si hubieras estudiado, habrías aprobado. If you had studied, you would have passed. (impossible past)

Type 2 uses the imperfect subjunctive + conditional; type 3 uses the pluperfect subjunctive + conditional perfect. Never use the present subjunctive right after si.
