advertisement

The imperfect subjunctive is the past form of the subjunctive. It’s used for hypotheticals, after past-tense triggers, and to be extra polite.

How to form it

Take the ellos form of the preterite, drop -ron, and add -ra endings (an -se set also exists and is interchangeable).

hablaron → hablara, hablaras…
comieron → comiera, comieras…
fueron → fuera, fueras… (ser/ir)
Si tuviera dinero, viajaría.If I had money, I would travel.
Quería que vinieras.I wanted you to come.
Quisiera un café.I would like a coffee. (very polite)
