C1 Reported speech (estilo indirecto)
advertisement
When you report what someone said, tenses usually “shift back” one step, like in English.
| “Voy al cine.” → Dijo que iba al cine. | “I’m going to the cinema.” → He said he was going to the cinema. |
| “Comí paella.” → Dijo que había comido paella. | “I ate paella.” → She said she had eaten paella. |
| “Ven.” → Me pidió que fuera. | “Come.” → He asked me to come. |
Present → imperfect, preterite/perfect → pluperfect, future → conditional, and commands → imperfect subjunctive. Pronouns and time words shift too (hoy → aquel día).
